Streetscapes

Flatbush Avenue:  Flatbush Avenue is the literal gateway to Downtown Brooklyn and the rest of the Borough, yet it now serves as a dividing line between Downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene. This $23 million improvement project will make this avenue a safer environment for cars and pedestrians alike and link Downtown with the residential communities east of Flatbush Avenue. Construction is expected to start in Spring/Summer 2009.

Fulton Street Mall:  This retail strip for a borough of 2.5 million attracts over 100,000 shoppers daily. A series of public improvements totaling $15 million are planned including new streetlights, bus shelters, sidewalks and the creation of a public square outside the historic Dime Savings Bank building. Construction started in May 2009 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2010. For more information on this project, click here.

Boerum Place Median Extension: This quarter-mile extension of a planted median on the street known to some as Brooklyn Bridge Boulevard was completed in June 2008. The median extension stretches from Fulton Street to Atlantic Avenue, creating a consistent streetscape that better links Downtown Brooklyn to the surrounding neighborhood. The median features 23 trees and 470 shrubs, and is maintained by the Court-Livingston-Schermerhorn BID.

BAM Cultural District: A series of streetscape improvements including new street trees and lighting will mark and identify the Cultural District as a unique place, and encourage the movement of people into the district from surrounding communities.
