NEW HOTEL OPENS IN DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN

Visitors to Downtown Brooklyn and New York now have one more accommodation option. The Sheraton Brooklyn New York hotel has opened its doors on 228 Duffield Street in Downtown Brooklyn.

Rooms, however, are not the only amenity that the Sheraton offers. Shortly after the hotel's opening, Grubstake, a full-service restaurant and upscale martini bar opened on the ground floor of the building. A rooftop lounge will also offer 360 degree views of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan. The new bar will give Downtown Brooklyn workers and visitors one more option for after-work drinks or cocktails.

For its hiring process, the DBP connected the owners of the Sheraton to the City's Workforce One center on Hoyt Street. Jon Coleman, general manager of the Sheraton asked Workforce One to focus their outreach and screening efforts towards local residents. "It was important to have employees that knew the area and lived close to the hotel."

The 25-story building has 321 guest rooms and adds another hotel to a growing trend of accommodation options in Downtown Brooklyn. Since 2007, the Brooklyn Marriott's completed expansion has been joined by the Nu Hotel on Smith and Atlantic and now the new Sheraton. Directly next door, the developers of the Sheraton, the Lam Group, have almost completed construction on the Aloft. Directly across the street from the Sheraton another new hotel is also already under construction. By 2012, there will be nearly 1,500 total hotel rooms in Downtown Brooklyn.

Alina Gonzalez, 37, a marketing executive at L'Oréal Paris in Midtown, recently moved to BellTel Lofts after living in Carroll Gardens for ten years. She was attracted by the amount of space that she could get for her money and the area's bright future, with $9 billion of private development underway.
