As significant producers of waste and consumers of energy, businesses play an important role in sustainability. They are in a position of power to control use and refuse, from thermostat level to materials that end up in the trash bin.

Learning about energy savings at Brooklyn Fare
The Green Business Program was created to provide a resource center for businesses looking for more sustainable practices and ways to save money. Businesses can use our website to learn how they can reduce the amount of waste produced and become more energy efficient. Some information comes from recommendations from the Department of Sanitation, Willdan, Con Edison and local waste carters. In addition, CLS has developed its own set of green business guidelines that are applicable to the businesses in Downtown Brooklyn. Businesses that make changes according to our guidelines may apply to become a CLS Green Business!
By making small changes in our daily routine, we can make a big impact on the environment, and save some green in the process.

Become A CLS Green Business
The Court-Livingston-Schermerhorn Business Improvement District provides a set of recommended actions that businesses can take to become more sustainable. Guidelines are specific to food service establishments, offices and retail stores. Businesses can use the guidelines as a checklist-if the minimum number of recommendations are met, businesses can submit the checklist to CLS and become a part of the CLS Green Business Program. Participating businesses will receive recognition for their environmentally friendly initiatives. This provides a marketing and competitive advantage for businesses, letting the customer know that they are shopping in an environmentally-conscious store.
