Public Safety: In January 2009, the CLS BID hired T & M Protection Resources, a private consulting group, to perform a comprehensive security assessment of the district. The consultant will assess existing conditions, meet with key security personnel in Downtown Brooklyn, conduct a town hall style meeting with stakeholders, and eventually make recommendations to improve the overall safety in the district. Working closely with members of the CLS Board of Directors and management, T & M will produce a final report by Spring 2009.

Retail Development:

A. Storefront Improvement Program:  For merchants who want to upgrade signage, install a new awning, or replace solid roll-down gates with attractive transparent ones, the CLS BID offers free design services and matching grants of up to $750 per storefront component. If you are interested, please contact us to schedule a site visit with our architect.

B. ValueCard Discount Program: The CLS BID now participates in the Downtown Brooklyn ValueCard discount program, which offers discounts to ValueCard holders at over 70 stores in Downtown Brooklyn. The card is FREE and can be obtained at the offices listed below. To download a list of participating retailers and their discounts, click here

C. Shopping Resources:
Downtown Brooklyn boasts over 400 stores from local boutiques to national retailers like Barnes & Noble. The CLS BID retail directory is a convenient listing of area businesses. For information on current sales, shopping, and special events in all of Downtown Brooklyn, visit our Shop Downtown Brooklyn website.

Landscaping + Horticulture: Working with Urban Arborists, the CLS BID oversees the maintenance of close to 280 street trees in the District. Trees are regularly monitored and treated through pruning and soil amendments to ensure a vibrant canopy cover. The CLS BID also maintains the Boerum Place median, a 4-block long landscaped median that stretches from Atlantic Avenue to Fulton Street. 23 trees and 470 shrubs fill the median year round, and seasonal installations are produced in the Spring and Fall.

Streetscape Improvements: In August 2008, 75 black metal Victor Stanley waste receptacles were installed throughout the district. In December 2008, the CLS BID issued a Request For Proposals for streetscape design services to landscape architecture firms. The winning firm will work closely with local stakeholders and city agencies to produce a vision for an attractive, active and sustainable physical environment. We expect a plan to be ready by Summer 2009.
